Job title: IT Security Apprentice
Daniel was part of our Apprentice intake in late 2017. Here we find out a little bit more about his experience of joining and what he’s enjoyed most in his time with us.
How did you find out about the role/Softcat?
I found out about the role at Softcat whilst looking online at different apprenticeships. I knew I wanted to work in IT but wasn’t 100% sure about which area that I wanted to specialise in. I saw Softcat advertising for an IT Networking Apprentice, and as I’d heard amazing things about the company I applied for the role. After two interviews, they couldn’t choose between two candidates so Softcat created the IT Security Apprentice role and offered that to me instead. I was over the moon and couldn’t wait to start in my new role.
Sum up what your job involves in a sentence?
It involves managing the in-house applications that Softcat relies on for security. Mainly the anti-virus software, mail filtering system, and the user awareness training platform we use.
Tell us the best thing about your job?
Apart from the people I work with, I really enjoy IT Security. It’s a massive and constantly growing environment with so many interesting avenues to go down. Being an apprentice, I go on lots of different courses and cover many different areas of security. Some of these courses are really amazing and demonstrate just how fun and interesting your career is going to be.
How would you describe the culture at Softcat?
It’s definitely a ‘work hard play hard’ culture. You’re expected to try your hardest as would be expected anywhere, but at Softcat you’re really well-rewarded and treated – something which I’m sure isn’t always the same at other companies. It’s a great working environment and everyone is so friendly and helpful.
Describe your colleagues/managers – what are they like to work with?
My manager and colleagues are great, and they’re some of the most knowledgeable and helpful people I’ve ever known. If I have any issues within the workplace or with my coursework, they’re always happy to sit down with me and explain everything until I fully understand it. There’s not a doubt in my mind that everyone’s working hard to put me on the best path for my future.
What’s the most fun or rewarding thing you’ve done at Softcat?
At the end of my very first week at Softcat, myself and all the Operations staff went over to Reading for a day of activities and an evening of parties. Initially I was quite nervous, but that very quickly changed as I was welcomed with open arms by people I’d never met before; it was a really fun day doing things like rock climbing, laser tag and riding mud buggies! The weekend was pretty much the best way to welcome me into the company.
What has Softcat helped you to achieve?
Softcat has helped me to Identify the areas of IT that I really want to pursue. Getting on all the different courses I’ve been on, and gaining different qualifications, has given me some fantastic insight into what I want to do in my career.
Tell us about how you socialise or do things outside of the office with people from work?
There a quite a few big events throughout the year as well as regular team nights out that bring everyone together for a good time.
What would you say to someone thinking of joining Softcat?
I’d highly recommend that they apply. It’s honestly a great company to work for with even better people to work with. They’re constantly having events and changing things around to make the workplace even better; it really does feel like they greatly care about their people.
What does success at Softcat mean to you?
To me, success at Softcat means being able to add value to the company. Thanks to the huge amount of support I’ve received, I’m able to manage and complete projects to a high level which reflects positively on me and the whole team.
