Introduction

The Project Manager plays a key role in delivering technology and business-change initiatives across Softcat, with a particular focus on Vendor Alliances, billing and vendor-led change. This is a 12-month fixed-term role working directly with a cross-functional squad, bringing the structure, clarity and delivery discipline needed to move work forward while supporting the team to adopt effective Agile ways of working.

The role remains firmly accountable for managing a defined workstream, combining core project management responsibilities with practical squad-based delivery. You will bring structure to the work, manage risks and dependencies, support effective planning and help the squad improve flow, collaboration and delivery outcomes.

As a Project Manager, you will manage a defined workstream across Vendor Alliances and billing, delivered through a cross-functional squad and involving vendors such as Microsoft and Adobe.

You will combine structured project management with Agile delivery practices, working closely with Vendor Alliances, Billing, the Business Analyst, Scrum Master, technical leads, business stakeholders, external partners and the PMO to maintain delivery momentum, manage dependencies and provide clear delivery confidence.

As Project Manager, you'll be responsible for:

Workstream Delivery & Governance

  • Manage the defined workstream from planning through to delivery and transition, maintaining clear accountability for outcomes, milestones and delivery commitments.
  • Build and maintain proportionate delivery artefacts including plans, RAID, dependencies, decisions, milestones and status reporting
  • Maintain a joined-up view of scope, priorities, capacity, dependencies and delivery commitments for the workstream
  • Coordinate vendor and supplier delivery plans, ensuring external milestones, commitments, risks and dependencies are reflected in the overall workstream plan
  • Use Agile, Waterfall or hybrid delivery approaches pragmatically, based on the needs of the work and squad
  • Provide clear, evidence-based delivery confidence to stakeholders and escalate risks, issues or decisions where required

Squad Delivery & Facilitation

Work within the squad environment to enable effective delivery while retaining Project Manager accountability for the workstream

  • Work closely with the Business Analyst, Scrum Master and technical leads to translate priorities into achievable delivery plans
  • Facilitate planning, dependency and delivery conversations where Project Manager support adds value, complementing rather than replacing the Scrum Master role
  • Help create clarity around ownership, priorities, delivery commitments and decisions
  • Work with the squad to identify and remove blockers, escalating organisational or cross-team impediments where required
  • Encourage ownership and accountability within the squad without becoming overly directive
  • Support incremental delivery and a focus on delivering value and outcomes

Risk, Dependency & Stakeholder Management

  • Identify, assess and proactively manage workstream risks, issues, assumptions and dependencies
  • Manage dependencies outside the squad, coordinating with other teams and stakeholders where delivery relies on wider activity
  • Act as a key delivery contact for strategic vendors and suppliers, maintaining clear actions, ownership and escalation routes across internal and external teams
  • Provide clear communication on progress, delivery confidence, blockers and decisions required
  • Bring evidence, options and recommendations to support timely decision-making
  • Monitor vendor roadmaps, raising delivery concerns early and working with Vendor Alliances and Billing to understand and manage commercial, operational or invoicing impacts
  • Manage stakeholder expectations around scope, priorities, timelines, capacity and risk

Agile Ways of Working & Continuous Improvement

Build practical Agile delivery capability while helping the squad improve how it works and delivers.

  • Support effective Agile ways of working within the squad and adapt delivery practices pragmatically to the context.
  • Work with the Scrum Master and squad to identify opportunities to improve planning, collaboration, flow and predictability.
  • Develop practical experience of using capacity, flow and delivery measures to support decisions and understand delivery health.
  • Use retrospectives, delivery insight and feedback to identify and follow through continuous improvement actions.
  • Develop understanding of product-led delivery, including how squad-level delivery connects to wider priorities and business outcomes.
  • Share learning and good practice with the wider Project Management, Scrum Master and delivery communities.
